Best Beaches on Kangaroo Island

November 18, 2021

A sojourn on Kangaroo Island is best spent with sand between your toes, a gentle sea breeze against your cheek and the sun warming your skin. Kangaroo Island is framed by some of the best beaches in Australia and we’ve spent our fair share of time exploring the island’s coastline. With so many postcard-perfect and rarely crowded stretches of sand to choose from, Antechamber Bay Retreats is the perfect base for seaside exploration of Kangaroo Island’s best beaches. Settle in at your beachside abode, then grab your sunscreen, beach brolly and towel and beach hop around the island with our local’s guide to the top five beaches on Kangaroo Island.

1. Antechamber Bay, Kangaroo Island

Crystal-clear waters, sand so fine it squeaks and abundant marine life. We may be a little bias, but we think Antechamber Bay is the best beach on Kangaroo Island. Stretching 4.2km of unspoilt and private beach bliss, Antechamber Bay’s pristine sand and sapphire waters are your front yard when staying with us at Antechamber Bay Retreats. Bordered by Lashmar Conservation Park and our working farm, here tranquil bushland rolls into secluded, footprint-free shores. The mainland-facing long, sandy beach takes in sweeping views across Backstairs Passage and is one of the best spots to soak in sunset on the island. Antechamber Bay is a true island paradise.

2. Island Beach, Kangaroo Island

Nestled on the island’s eastern cove, Nepean Bay, the sheltered shores of Island Beach are perfect for lolling about on a sun-drenched summer day. The calm waters make it a popular beach spot for families and are also ideal for snorkelling, kayaking and fishing. Island Beach lies less than a 30-minute drive away from Antechamber Bay Retreats, between Penneshaw and American River.

3. Emu Bay, Kangaroo Island

Emu Bay is on Kangaroo Island's north coast, only 10 kilometres on a sealed road from the island's main town of Kingscote. Here you’ll find a pristine 4km beach encased by towering sand dunes and untouched bushland. If you own a 4WD, you can let down your tyres and drive straight onto the beach for a day of surf and sand, or pack your rod and cast a line among the local fishermen on the beach jetty which dates back to 1918. Emu Bay is about an hour’s drive from Antechamber Bay Retreats.

4. Vivonne Bay, Kangaroo Island

Once voted Australia’s best beach, the lurid turquoise waters of Vivonne Bay are postcard perfection. This iconic horseshoe-shaped beach stretches six kilometres with snow-white sand and eye-piercing blue waters bookended by distant dunes to the north and a fisherman-lined jetty to the south. Spend a day exploring countless rockpools, building sandcastles and spotting dolphins frolicking on the horizon. While you're there, be sure to try the famous whiting burger from the Vivonne Bay General Store. Vivonne Bay is just over an hour’s drive from Antechamber Bay Retreats.

5. Stokes Bay, Kangaroo Island
